Who we are
Child's Play is a small, friendly pre-school in Guildford for children aged two to five. We have been in the United Reformed Church hall on Portsmouth Road since 2008, opposite St Nicolas' Infant School.
We are owned and managed by two local parents, Thea Arthur and Susan Raftery, who have run Child's Play together since April 2008. Most of our staff first came here as parents. We are registered with Ofsted and rated Good.
What your child will do
Free-flow play indoors and outdoors for the whole session, with a few fixed points to hang the morning on. The garden is open every session, every day, whatever the weather.
We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage, and we run three structured programmes every week alongside the ordinary business of a morning: Easy Talk Boost, Think Equal and Maths Champions.
Beyond the playroom
Sessions run alongside the morning, taken by people who do this for a living: yoga, music, dance, ball skills and Forest School. Most are optional and most ask only for a voluntary contribution. There is a full list, with the morning each one runs on and what it costs, on our What We Offer page.
When we are open
Term time only, and we follow Surrey County Council term dates. Our session times and the shape of a typical morning are set out in full on our Sessions & Curriculum page, and the current term dates are on our Term Dates page.
Fees and funding
We take children from two years old and accept all forms of Government funding, including Tax-Free Childcare and workplace voucher schemes. We are proud to offer genuinely free places.
The funding landscape is complicated, and we would far rather you rang and asked than worked it out alone. Our Admission & Fees page sets out the two funding streams for two year olds, the entitlements for three and four year olds, and our hourly rate for anything above the funded hours.
The people who will look after them
Nine of us, and between us a very long time in this hall. Every member of the team holds an enhanced DBS check and is trained in safeguarding, and you can read about each of us on our team page.
How to join us
Register your interest and we will be in touch about a place. It takes a couple of minutes, there is no waiting list fee, and it is not the same as accepting a place: we will ring to talk it through and arrange for you to come and see the hall.
You are very welcome to come and look round first. Most people do.
